Foot Care and Your Health: Why Should I Care SO Much About My Feet?

Did you know that there are 33 joints and over 100 muscles and tendons in EACH foot? While you read this, take a moment to wiggle your toes in your shoes. Can you feel them like you always have? Do they move as they should? If so, below are some tips to keep them that way. If not, it is time to see a medical professional about them.

I often tell my patients to think of their feet as the foundation of a house. If the foundation is cracked or unstable, the rest of the structure suffers. When I arrive at a patient’s home, I am not just looking at toenails; I am looking at their ticket to independence.

Foot Care: The Connection to Your Overall Health

There are many medical conditions we acquire as we age that can affect our feet. Neuropathy means you can’t feel them as well as you used to. Circulation problems, such as peripheral arterial disease (PAD) or peripheral vascular disease (PVD), mean they don’t heal like they used to. “Minor” issues like nail fungus can make nails thick and brittle, making them very difficult to cut and often causing pain with every step. Calluses on your feet are more than just dry skin; they are a physical sign that your feet are rubbing against your shoes in ways that they should not. If left alone, those calluses can break down into open sores.

Anyone who has diabetes, chronic kidney disease, multiple sclerosis, PAD, PVD, or toenail fungus that causes pain should have their feet examined at least once a year. Many patients qualify for nail care every 9 weeks. As an NP, I am specifically trained to assess your skin, circulation, and sensation while carefully trimming your nails to prevent further issues. My goal is simple: to prevent wounds from ever developing

Your Feet: The Foundation of Your Independence

In my practice, I see a clear cycle: when your feet hurt, you move less. When you move less, your heart health declines, your muscles weaken, and your risk of falling increases significantly. By caring for your feet, I am helping you stay active and upright in the home you love.

I also keep an eye out for the “silent” warning signs. I check to see if one foot feels colder than the other or if there are subtle color shifts, like redness or dusky blue tones, that tell me your blood isn’t moving quite right. Even a small scratch that hasn’t healed in a week is a red flag that I take very seriously.

Why In-Home Foot and Medical Care Matters

I chose to bring my practice to your living room because I believe the best way to understand your foot health is to see you in your natural environment. When I come to you, I can see the shoes you wear every day and the rugs you walk over. This allows me to provide personalized advice that a clinic setting can’t match.

It’s not just about the trim; it’s about the peace of mind that comes from knowing a professional has eyes on the parts of your body that are the hardest to reach–and the easiest to forget.
